This is a very large African American cemetery, measuring approx 200' x 75'. Only 1 inscribed stone could be seen however there may be more underneath the heavy forrest floor of fallen leaves. There is obvious evidence of 30 to 40 more graves by upright fieldstones and uniform depressions, but it is highly likely that a closer inspection would reveal many more graves. In a book published in 1976 about the history of Valentines, Virginia, the writer, Mr. William R. “Willie” Wright labeled this cemetery as..... “Large Negro Cemetery (William Clary Place).” Neighborhood inquiries in 2021 identified no one with knowledge of this cemetery, including one with surname Clayton.
