According to Civil War Soldiers from Brunswick County, Virginia, Pvt. Harvey Massenburg Smith and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Pearson, are buried here, CWS f BCV, p. 510. |
From Tracy Clary December 2007: |
This cemetery is not well known at all. I have been to it twice in my life. |
There are no marked stones visible, only field stones markers and lots of very clear and uniform depressions. Some of the depressions are as much as 2 and 3 ft deep. |
It is densely overgrown with groundcover, very thick layer of periwinkle and leaves. There very possibly could be some engraved stones that have fallen over and been covered by years of foliage. |
It was once reported that Pvt. Harvey Massenburg Smith was buried here and had a marked headstone. I will need to assemble a group to go in with me sometime and probe the entire area for possible stones that may be covered. |
The cemetery is large, approx. 70 ft x 100 ft, and it has a ditch dug all the way around it approx. 3 ft wide and 2 ft deep. I did not count depressions, but its probably at least 30 to 40 graves there. |
